Next on the agenda were two stops in France.
Marseille
Our first stop was Marseille, a city we visited on our first trip to Europe in 2010. Marseille is the second largest city in France, with nearly 1 million inhabitants, and is located on the Mediterranean coast. We decided to visit a neighborhood we had not spent time in before.
The cruise ship shuttle bus dropped us off near the Marseille Cathedral.
We ran some errands and then walked the Le Panier neighborhood, Marseille’s oldest quarter, the sight of its original Greek settlement. After wandering for a while, we settled on lunch at A Strega. It was on a quieter street and had a lunch special with the “catch of the day”. It was a typical French lunch of fish, salad, and fries (with real mayonnaise, not ketchup thank you!). And it turns out that Mick Jagger has visited the restaurant in the past.
La Seyne-Sur-Mer
Our second stop was a new one for us, the municipality of La Seyne-Sur-Mer (or just La Seyne), a suburb of Toulon with a population of approximately 60,000. We enjoyed the small-town ambiance, abundant and impressive street art, and the fabulous street market – we would have loved to shop that market if we were cooking our own food!
Both France and especially Spain had some of the finest food that has ever entered my belly. It was probably nice to get your feet on Terra firma. I’m envious of you two. Enjoy.
Agreed! We love Spain in particular 🙂
