Santa Rosa de Lima Again, Including Two New Restaurants

Santa Rosa de Lima Again, Including Two New Restaurants

We recently spent a weekend in Santa Rosa de Lima, in the same cabin we stayed at in my prior post about this small town near Guanajuato.  We were celebrating Kevin’s birthday.  This was our third time staying there.  It is a great short escape from the noise and busyness of the city.

For the first time, we came on a weekend.  Our logic in the past was that it would be quieter during the week, and since we are retired, why not go then!  While this is still true, because it is a tourist town visited primarily by people on day trips from Guanajuato, some of the restaurants in Santa Rosa are only open on the weekends.  And Kevin’s birthday happened to be on Saturday.

We did several of the same things that we did on prior trips – relax and enjoy the scenery at the cabin and take hikes to the Presa (a reservoir) and in the nearby mountains.  But we did eat at two new, and excellent, restaurants!  Those restaurants are the focus of this post.

Café Chuin Barra Nutritiva

Café Chuin Barra Nutritiva, or simply Café Chuin, is a place with a French-trained chef that serves several dishes each weekend on an ever-changing menu.  There are many vegetarian and vegan choices as well as a few with seafood, eggs, or meat.  On our visit, we ordered several different types of what can best be described as stews, some fish cakes, and some cauliflower.  It came with handmade tortillas, made to order.  We had a fermented beverage made from pineapple skin, similar to kombucha.  And, they had Kevin’s favorite, carrot cake, for dessert!  The food was delicious, and if we are in Santa Rosa again on a weekend I would return without hesitation.

As wonderful as the food was, the journey to and from the restaurant was also fun.  It is on a dirt path that goes past a drinking water source that is used by many local people (we did not try it).  It is accessible by car from the other side of the restaurant, but we were on foot.

AU-MA BBQ

AU-MA BBQ is an authentic Texas-style barbeque place.  It is like a food truck with picnic tables and a shaded area with a great view where you can enjoy your food and beverages.  They smoke their own meat overnight for 12 hours.  The coleslaw was excellent and our favorite side dish that we tried.  We tried the brisket and a Kansas City style pork rib.  They even have Shiner Bock (a beer from Texas from those who are not in the know) and other choices, but we chose to have wine.  We have not had better barbeque anywhere, and we have had it in Texas. Another great place that I would love to return to in the future.

Both of these restaurants are highly recommended!
