I have written previously of my love of the Japanese poetry form, haiku. Maybe it is part of my logical mind, but I love the challenge of trying to express something in the structure of a first line with 5 syllables, a second line with 7 syllables, and a third line of 5 syllables. There are other forms, but this is I believe one of the common ones, and the one I learned about in elementary school.
I write haikus frequently, but many of them are just random thoughts and not worthy of publishing. But some of my best haikus are about or include elements of nature.
Here are some I have written, in approximate order from most recent to oldest; if I have the date and location it was written, it is included. I plan to update this periodically with newer additions.
6/30/23 — Guanajuato
Finally, the rain!
Pitter patter of raindrops
Welcome to my ears
9/17/22 — Guanajuato
Hello, Jupiter
Fellow being, my dear love
So glad to see you
4/5/22 — Guanajuato
Beautiful morning
Just as the world is waking
Sunrise arriving
10/2/21 — Guanajuato
A tree in a rock
Near beginning of the trail
That Kevin found us
6/28/21 — Guanajuato
There is beauty in
Trees, birds, colorful houses
The smile of a friend
6/10/21 — Guanajuato
Just before sunrise
A cacophony of sound
Bird song, dogs, burro
5/11/21 – Mazatlán
Inspired by nature
I am being reminded
To pay attention
3/10/21 — Mazatlán
Watching the frigates
Circling above my head
A peaceful morning
2/3/21 — Mazatlán
Late afternoon walk
Beautiful sea, rocky shore
Warm sun on my skin
2/2/21 — Mazatlán
Drop of the ocean
Landed on my hand today
Waves striking sea wall
The following was previously published in this blog entry about the Tahoe Rim Trail heading north from Spooner Summit in Nevada
Little warning calls
A wall of sound in front of
The hawk that flew through
Skiing Haiku – Sierra Nevada, unknown ski trail
Snow tickles my nose
Falling softly on the trail
My skis are quiet
Hiking Haiku – Sierra Nevada, unknown hiking trail
Walking up the trail
You can indulge in nature
Always time well spent
Lovely, I have always enjoyed the simplicity that is haiku
Thank you, and agreed!
