For many people it is important to have a “permanent” home. I have realized that I am not one of them.
After spending part of the last year trying to settle into a community and finding the experience less than rewarding (a long story that I consider a life lesson and something I am not going to dwell on here), I have concluded that I feel like I am home wherever I am at the time, including when traveling long term.
This is something that I have direct experience with and have written about in the past:
- From 2004 – 2006, my husband Kevin and I sailed from Bainbridge Island, WA, USA down the Pacific coast of the US to Mexico and spent 17 months sailing there. We always had our “home” with us (our boat), but it moved. Our community of sailing friends that we met at that time continue to be some of our dearest friends, even though we only see each other occasionally. Some of the background about this adventure is in this blog post: https://catherinedezelarkrause.com/?p=53
- In 2019, Kevin and I spent approximately 6 months traveling to 20 countries in North America and Europe. I wrote about that year of travel in this blog post: https://catherinedezelarkrause.com/?p=245
We have lived in many places and enjoyed all of them. But it is time to travel again.
Ever since I first saw an itinerary for a World Cruise, I wanted to do it. For those who do not know, a World Cruise circumnavigates the globe, something that we had once thought we might do on our own boat but didn’t. We much prefer traveling by boat when someone else is responsible for it. It was not difficult for me to convince Kevin of the merits of a world cruise, so when we sold our house in Carson City, NV, USA in 2018, we set the money aside.
Then COVID hit, delaying our plans …. Until now!
We soon will be boarding the Island Princess in Fort. Lauderdale, where we will be returning in late April.
Stay tuned if you would like to follow along with our adventures, literally around the globe!
Looking forward to “traveling” with you from my home in Minneapolis! Safe travels ! Calm sea!
